RISE with SAP vs. HEC: What are the differences?

Author: Sangita Nath

Most companies by now are aware of the massive benefits of switching to cloud technology, and many have already taken the step to realizing the opportunities.

Those still left wondering which cloud services are the best fit for their business have an abundance of options to choose from. Among the best are those offered by SAP, but even deciding between these can be a challenge. That’s why we thought it would be a good idea to compare two of SAP’s core cloud offerings: RISE with SAP and HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC).

What is RISE with SAP?

RISE with SAP is a relatively new solution that bundles together several SAP offerings into a package the company describes as “business transformation as a service”. The goal is to help companies think of SAP software as a service-based model rather than purchase to own, while providing them with a clear, simplified path to adopting its flagship S/4HANA ERP.

The solution is packaged with additional value-added services alongside the core ERP functionality. Its unique selling point is that it’s designed as an all-in-one cloud infrastructure solution in a single contract and a unified service level agreement that provides companies everything they need across software, services and infrastructure to become an intelligent enterprise.

RISE with SAP comes with S/4HANA Cloud, migration and implementation services, access to SAP’s Business Network, and intelligent business process reengineering offerings, and is hosted on SAP’s public cloud platform or via a hyperscaler from the likes of AWS or Google.

Digging a bit deeper, RISE with SAP is made up of six key components:

  • Business process redesign: Allows businesses to perform real-time analysis of process performance and compare metrics to industry benchmarks.
  • Technical migration: Migrates the business environment to a standardized, modular and flexible solution to maximize agility.
  • Cloud adoption: Gets companies running IT via hyperscalers or in an SAP data center.
  • SAP Business Technology Platform: Enables businesses to rapidly innovate by providing a semantic data model, an AI and analytics layer, and more.
  • SAP Business Network: Allows companies to manage complete supply chains with real-time visibility so they can make faster decisions and react to market opportunities.
  • SAP S/4HANA Cloud: Provides next-generation applications needed to succeed in the digital economy and enables AI, RPA and advanced analytics innovation within the platform.

RISE with SAP vs. HEC

What is HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC)?

SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) is a comprehensive private cloud infrastructure and managed services solution. It allows businesses to more easily and quickly adopt SAP S/4HANA, the aforementioned ERP that is the core component of RISE with SAP, along with other solutions powered by SAP HANA, the company’s popular in-memory computing platform.

HEC is designed to support critical HANA processes and provide a stable platform for cloud applications so that businesses can accelerate innovation, reduce risk and achieve faster ROI. The goal of HEC is to help businesses achieve new levels of visibility, TCO and agility in ERP.

It optimizes the SAP environment to standardize the software landscape, reducing costs and time requirements. It also allows businesses to more easily build smart applications and functionality for the likes of AI, IoT and Machine Learning on top of their cloud platforms.

What is RISE with SAP

Whereas RISE with SAP is hosted on a public cloud, HEC is offered through a private managed cloud service accessed via a protected network to maximize data security.

HEC comes with a single service level agreement covering solution infrastructure, operating system, local database, HANA database, and applications to simplify and streamline management. As a private managed cloud, it is hosted in a single-tenant environment with hardware, storage and networks dedicated to a single customer with enterprise-grade security.

It is designed to be customizable and can be optimized to suit a company’s specific cloud requirements. To adopt HEC, businesses can deploy an existing SAP license in the cloud or sign up for a monthly cloud subscription.

Is RISE with SAP or HEC better for my business?

Now that we’ve introduced RISE with SAP and HEC, we can turn our attention to which solution best fits your business.

The main difference to bear in mind is that RISE with SAP is a one-stop-shop solution that provides businesses lagging behind in digital transformation with a complete package to get up to speed and adopt S/4HANA. It’s a great option for companies that do not require much customization and are happy having their ERP hosted in a public cloud.

HEC, on the other hand, is a popular option for companies looking for a private managed cloud solution that provides opportunities for customization and a bedrock for S/4HANA adoption.

What both solutions have in common is that they are excellent starting points to take advantage of the next-generation benefits of S/4HANA, and they each come with simple and effective SLAs and contracts.

At Ameri100, we excel in deploying SAP systems for large enterprises and medium-sized businesses.
